We have been breeding Icelandic Horses since 1996. After extensive research, we chose Icelandic Horses because of their calm disposition, easy care, hardiness, reasonable size, versatility and natural inclination to associate easily with children and adults. For over 900 years, the Viking descendents of Eric the Red, bred the Icelandic Horse to be their mode of transportation. The Icelandic Horse had to be able to survive the extreme climate of Iceland, be transported in open boats and traverse the rugged volcanic terrain. The Vikings bred for hardiness, strength, temperament, cooperative attitude. and willingness. We still breed for those qualities today. In the Icelandic tradition, on our farm, mares give birth in the open pasture with the rest of the herd nearby. By being reared in the herd, the foals learn herd manners, discipline and respect from the beginning. More breed history can be found on the web page for the United State Icelandic Horse Congress via my link page.
